Porsche 718 Cayman revealed in Beijing

Porsche has revealed the new 718 Cayman at the Beijing motor show 2016. The hard-top sibling to the 718 Boxster revealed earlier in the year, the new Cayman gets cosmetic updates and puts to use its sibling’s new engines.

Styling changes are in-line with the 718 Boxster with a new front bumper, revised side intakes to provide the engine with better cooling and a new rear bumper and tail-lamps. The exhaust is also new with the standard model featuring a centrally located trapezoidal exhaust with the more powerful iteration,  the Cayman S, featuring a dual exhaust design.

Inside, there is a revised dashboard, a new steering based on the one in the 918 Spyder supercar and Porsche’s latest PCM infotainment system.

The car is powered by the new family of downsized turbocharged engines with the standard Cayman using a 300hp 2.0-litre flat-four turbo-petrol engine in place of the older naturally aspirated 2.7-litre flat-six. The Cayman S forgoes the old 3.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-six in favour of the new 350hp turbocharged 2.5-litre flat-four unit from the Boxster S. Both new engines develop around 25hp more than their predecessors.

Gearbox choices continue to include a standard six-speed manual unit and an optional seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic.

In terms of performance, Porsche claims a 0-100kph time of  4.7 seconds and a top speed of 274kph for the standard Cayman and a time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 285kph for the Cayman S. The claimed figures being for the model equipped with the PDK automatic gearbox and the optional Sports Chrono pack.

Other mechanical changes to the 718 Cayman include 300mm and 290mm front and rear disc brakes respectively, firmer springs, retuned dampers, larger-diameter anti-roll bars, wider rear tyres and a more direct steering. Porsche’s Active Suspension Management is available as an option alongside a Sports Chrono pack which now gets the addition of a steering mounted dial to change drive modes.

The car is set to go on sale internationally later in the year.
