GOOD FOR: Ride and handling, high-quality interior

LOOK OUT FOR: Clutch wear, body damage

Jeep first launched the Compass in 2017, and we loved it for its attractive design, rugged nature and off-road prowess. Then, in 2021, Jeep launched an updated version, which brought with it a tweaked exterior design, a completely new interior and new features. In a sea of front-wheel drive ‘SUVs’, the Compass stands out for its off-road capability and good on-road manners. So, if you are on the lookout for a ‘proper’ SUV for your family, this one deserves consideration. Here’s what you need to know.

    Jeep Compass engine, gearbox details

The Compass was offered with two engines, even with the facelift. The 163hp, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol versions came with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT with two-wheel drive. The 170hp, 2.0-litre diesel version had a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed torque converter and was the only one to offer 4x4 with off-road modes. However, in 2023, Jeep discontinued offering petrol mills on the Compass.

    Jeep Compass fuel economy

If your usage is primarily in the city, the petrol should serve you well. However, they are known to be thirsty, with owners getting a real-world efficiency figure of around 6-7kpl, especially with the automatic. To see the Compass in its best light, opt for the diesel, as its torquey nature complements this SUV well. And apart from getting a 4x4 option, the diesels are more efficient as well.

Compass’ upright stance and squared-off fenders scream ‘proper’ SUV.

    Jeep Compass variants and features

At launch, Jeep offered the Compass facelift in four trims – Sport, Longitude (O), Limited (O) and Model S – while a few special editions were added later on. There was also a hardcore ‘Trailhawk’ version for serious off-roaders. In terms of features, the range-topping Model S gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights, connected car tech, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone auto climate control, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, leather upholstery, powered tailgate, 8-way electrically adjustable front seats with ventilation and 18-inch alloy wheels. The safety kit on the Model S trim includes six airbags, traction control, ESC, hill-start assist and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

The base Sport trim is only worth going for if you’re on a strict budget or if you want a petrol-manual version, as it feels quite barebones. Otherwise, it’s better to opt for one of the top two trims, as they have all the features you need.

The minimalist dashboard is high-quality and features two crisp screens.

The Compass came with a standard warranty of 3 years/1,00,000km, with the option of extended warranty and service packages. If you can find it, it’s worth going for one that’s still covered under warranty, as these SUVs are known to have a few problems. Service costs are more or less on par with rivals, but spares are priced on the higher side, and Jeep doesn’t have the most widespread service network in India. Still, what’s nice is that you’re getting a used SUV that looks the same and has the same powertrain as a brand-new one, as the Compass has not been updated since.

What to look out for in a used Jeep Compass

    Clutch wear

In the manual versions, few owners have faced premature clutch wear. The clutch’s springy nature leads to drivers riding it, leading to early wear. Take a test drive and notice if the pedal feels too hard to depress or if you feel like the clutch is slipping, as these are signs of a worn-out clutch.

Compass manual variants sometimes suffer from premature clutch wear.

    Body damage

With the Jeep being a capable off-roader, many owners are likely to have taken it for off-road excursions. This could’ve led to damage to the underbody and body panels, like the bumper. So, it’s advisable that you thoroughly check the SUV for any damages.

    Software issues

Some owners have encountered software and electronic glitches with the touchscreen infotainment, digital instrument cluster and even the auto gearbox controls. So, it’s worth checking that everything works as intended and that the software is up to date.

The infotainment system also throws up software and electronic glitches.

    Jeep Compass special editions

Jeep discontinued the Longitude variant in 2023 before reintroducing it in 2024. Throughout its lifespan, there have been several special editions, such as the 80th Anniversary, Black Shark and Night Eagle, which had certain visual differences and feature changes.

Second hand Jeep Compass price, resale value

    Rs 14 lakh-22 lakh

With such a wide range, you’ll find used examples at various prices. However, don’t look to spend over Rs 22 lakh, as you’d be better off buying a new one. Demand isn’t high, so use that to negotiate a better price.
