The TVS Jupiter, India’s second-bestselling scooter, has achieved the seven million wholesale unit milestone in the domestic market. Originally introduced as a 110cc model and later as a 125cc variant, the Jupiter brand has sold a total of 7.14 million units (71,40,927 units). By the end of November 2024, the combined sales of the 110cc and 125cc TVS Jupiter models accounted for 62 percent of TVS Motor Co’s total scooter sales of 11.48 million units.

The Jupiter continues to be the Hosur-based two-wheeler major’s bestselling scooter as well as the bestselling product across its entire two-wheeler portfolio. FY2024 marked the Jupiter’s best fiscal year performance – at 8,44,863 units, surpassing its previous best of 8,10,916 units in FY2018. It was also TVS Motor Co’s bestselling two-wheeler in FY2024, outperforming the Raider 125 (4,78,443 units), XL100 moped (4,81,803 units), Apache series (3,78,112 units), and NTorq 125 sporty scooter (3,31,865 units).

In the first nine months of the ongoing fiscal year, TVS has despatched 7,01,360 Jupiters to its showrooms across the country, up 22 percent (April-November 2023: 5,65,850 units). As in FY2024, the Jupiter continues to remain way ahead of its siblings in the April-November 2024 period – NTorq (2,52,698 units), Raider (2,95,863 units), Apache (3,08,654 units) and XL moped (3,58,096 units). TVS Motor Co. has also exported over 80,000 Jupiter scooters between FY2014 and FY2024.

Last million units sold in 14 months

The TVS Jupiter is the closest rival to India’s bestselling scooter, the Honda Activa. The scooter gave a glimpse of its promising future soon after its launch, and in less than two years, it crossed the 5 lakh unit sales mark, on May 14, 2015.

Thirty months later, on June 13, 2016, the Jupiter crossed the one-million sales milestone for the first time. It surpassed the two-million mark on September 26, 2017. The four-million milestone came up early in FY2021, followed by five million in June 2022. To celebrate this achievement, TVS launched the 110cc Jupiter Classic in the top-of-the-line spec with disc brakes on September 23, 2022. The six-million sales milestone was reached in October 2023, with the last million units sold in approximately 14 months.

What has helped the Jupiter sustain its success and grow its market share is TVS’s strategy of regularly introducing new variants and upgrades. Following the success of its first 125cc scooter, the sporty NTorq, TVS introduced the Jupiter 125 in October 2021. The feature-laden, bigger and more powerful Jupiter 125cc, with industry-first features such as the largest under-seat storage, has proven to be a growth driver for the brand, alongside the original 110cc model.

In August 2024, TVS launched the new Jupiter 110 with new styling, powered by the 113.3cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke engine, which develops 8hp at 6,500rpm and 9.8 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. The new model also incorporates iGO Assist and a number of first-in-segment features, owing to the fact that the 110 is now based on the same platform as the 125.

Jupiter helps power TVS scooter market share to 25 percent

Since its launch, the Jupiter has helped give TVS a strong position in India’s scooter market. Within a year of its launch, TVS’ scooter market share grew from 12.68 percent to 15.19 percent in FY2015, and further to 16.36 percent in FY2018, when the TVS NTorq 125 was introduced in the penultimate month of that fiscal. Since then, the Jupiter-NTorq combined has accelerated TVS’ scooter market share to 25 percent, which is next only to market leader Honda’s 43 percent in FY2024.

Proof of the Jupiter powering TVS’s scooter sales can be amply seen in the company’s sales numbers. Of the company’s cumulative sales of 11.48 million (1,14,89,164 units) scooters from FY2014 to the end of November 2024, the Jupiter accounts for 7.14 million units (71,40,927 units), which makes for a handsome contribution of 62 percent.

Jupiter rides toward 1 million sales in FY25, CNG variant in the offing

In the first eight months of the current fiscal year, TVS Motor Co. has despatched a total of 12,02,194 scooters, up 21 percent YoY (April-November 2023: 9,87,840 units) to its dealers across India. Of this, the Jupiter’s contribution, at 7,01,360 units, is 58 percent and the highest, followed by the NTorq 125 (2,52,698 units (up 8 percent)/21 percent share).

Of the overall scooter industry’s wholesales of 47,87,080 units in the April-November 2024 period, TVS Motor Co. currently holds a market share of 25 percent, below market leader Honda’s 44 percent. The Jupiter, which has averaged monthly sales of 87,670 units in the current fiscal till the end of November, is likely to cross the 1-million sales mark for the first time in FY2025 if it maintains the same pace of growth. And, it’s learnt that there’s a CNG variant in the new Jupiter product pipeline too. This will make TVS the first ground-up CNG scooter manufacturer worldwide. Stay tuned for the launch, slated to be in the first half of 2025.
