The last month of 2021 turned out to be a slow one for the Indian two-wheeler industry as sales slumped 11 percent. The sales in December stood at 10,06,062 units as against 11,27,917 vehicles in December 2020.

The slowdown is due to the continuing semiconductor shortage, high raw material costs, shortage of containers and high freight costs.

Hero MotoCorp sold 35,37,640 for the nine-month period ending December 2021, which is a 13.8 percent drop over the same period in 2020, when it sold 41,04,777 units.

Honda sold 2,10,638 in December as against 2,42,046 units in December 2020. For the period of April-December 2021-’22, it sold 25,58,379 units, a 0.3 percent decline.

In the nine-month period ending December 2021, Bajaj Auto sold 13,01,984 units, down 1.48 percent from the 13,21,644 units it sold the previous year.

TVS Motor Company’s December sales were down 17 percent and between April-December 2021, it sold 15,09,615 units as against 15,61,712 units in the year-earlier period.

    A total of 1,11,15,915 two-wheelers were sold in the April-December 2021 period.
