Yamaha has teased the upcoming launch of the all-new R9, a faired version of the existing MT-09 that will share the same engine. The current gen MT-09 is available in three variants and is the first motorcycle out of Yamaha to feature the all new Y-AMT gearbox.

    1. Will be the new flagship superport by brand
    2. Will likely share the same engine as MT-09

    Yamaha R9 details

The MT-09 is powered by a 888cc, liquid-cooled, three-cylinder motor that produces a peak output of 119hp at 10,000rpm and 93Nm at 7,000rpm. The upcoming R9 will likely get the same motor, but its state-of-tune and output figures remain to be seen. Currently, the MT-09 is offered in three variants: standard, Y-AMT, and SP. We recently had the opportunity to fly to Japan to ride the MT-09 Y-AMT, along with its other variants. The R9 will also likely get the same 6-speed gearbox as the standard variant.

In terms of design, the teaser video showcases the R9 with a headlamp, which shares a style similar to the current Yamaha R7. It will be interesting to see if Yamaha plans to launch a high-spec R9M version, similar to what it did with the R1. While brand has shared its intentions to introduce its premium line-up to India, it remains to be seen if and when it will bring the R9 to India. Currently, Yamaha has teased the global debut of the R9 for October 9 this year.
