BMW has launched the much-awaited, all-new Z4 in India in two variants – the lower-spec sDrive20i M Sport and the range-topping M40i, priced at Rs 64.90 lakh to Rs 78.90 lakh, respectively (ex-showroom, India).
The BMW Z4 M40i is powered by a 3.0-litre, inline six-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine that produces 340hp and 500Nm of peak torque, while the Z4 sDrive20i M Sport has a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine tuned to produce 197hp and 320Nm of torque. Both motors come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox that powers the rear wheels. Claimed 0-100kph times are 6.6sec and 4.5sec for the sDrive20i and M40i, respectively.
The Z4 variants look similar on the outside but they come with different exterior paint options. The higher-spec M40i is available with standard metallic finishes including black, silver, white, blue and red, with optional blue and grey finishes, while the lower-spec 20i M Sport gets the option of a non-metallic white finish as well.
The interiors are also similar, though a lot of the options on the lower-spec sDrive20i M Sport trim such as the M Sport interior package are standard on the top-spec Z4 M40i. In terms of equipment, both variants get a head-up display, front and rear parking display, wireless charging, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon system and active cruise control as optional extras. BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment software and the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster are standard.
In the Indian market, the BMW Z4 directly takes on the 300hp Porsche 718 Boxster, which at Rs 89.95 lakh is expensive and is also down on power when compared to the BMW.
