BMW has brought its flagship 8 Series range to India with the introduction of the 8 Series Gran Coupe (GC) and M8 Coupe. The 8 Series GC is available in two trims - 840i Gran Coupe (Rs 1.30 crore) and 840i Gran Coupe M Sport (Rs 1.55 crore). Meanwhile, the M8 Coupe is priced at Rs 2.15 crore.

Both the 8 Series GC and M8 are now available to purchase via the recently launched BMW Contactless Experience online retail platform.

The 8 Series Gran Coupe is BMW’s latest four-door coupe offering and it effectively replaces the 6 Series Gran Coupe in the carmaker's India line-up. Under the hood, the 840i come fitted with a 3.0-litre, straight- six, turbo-petrol engine, which produces 340hp and 500Nm of torque. The engine comes paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

As it measures over 5 metres in length and just under 2 metres in width, the 8 Series GC is comparable to the 7 Series in terms of size. However, due to its Coupe-like styling, headroom in the rear seats is tight, as we found out in our review of the 8 Series Gran Coupe. In M Sport form, the 840i gets more agressive, sportier design add-ons, along with BMW's Laserlight headlight units and larger 19-inch wheels. On the inside, the top-spec 840i gets four-zone climate control, BMW’s latest infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, a 16-speaker Harman-Kardon audio system, a 360-degree caemra, an all-digital instrument cluster and more.

The M8 Coupe is essentially a performance-focused version of the 8 Series Coupe line-up. For our market, BMW has only brought the M8, which is powered by a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine making 600hp and 750Nm of torque. The M8 Competiton, which is available in international markets has the same making 625hp. Power is sent to all-four wheels of the India-spec M8 via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. BMW’s latest xDrive all-wheel-drive system even provides the ability to switch the car completely to a rear-wheel drive layout. BMW claims a 0-100kph time of 3.3secs. In terms of features the M8 gets nearly everything seen on the 8 Series GC M Sport.

In terms of rivals, the 8 Series Gran Coupe will take on the Mercedes-Benz CLS, while the M8 will take on the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe.
