Honda Amaze diesel: reason for discontinuation

As we've reported before, the upcoming implementation of the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms in India from April 2023 is the key reason for the Amaze's diesel engine being dropped. Upgrading diesel engines to meet the new stringent emissions regulations is expensive. This, combined with the low demand for diesel in this segment, meant that there was little business case for the Amaze diesel.

Currently, Honda has only two diesel-powered models on sale in India – the WR-V and 5th gen CityHowever, these cars, too, are slated to be axed as the brand will cease producing diesel engines in India from February 2023. To recap, Honda first introduced the 1.5-litre diesel engine in India with the Amaze. It produced 100hp and 200Nm of torque when paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and 80hp and 160Nm of torque when coupled with the CVT automatic gearbox. This made the Amaze the only diesel automatic compact sedan in its class.

Honda Amaze to be a petrol-only model

The Amaze, which received a facelift back in August 2021, is now only available with the 90hp, 110Nm, 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine that comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. Offered in three trims  E, S and VX – the Amaze is priced between Rs 6.89 lakh and Rs 9.48 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

    Honda future plans

Honda recently released the first teaser of its upcoming SUV, which will see a debut by summer 2023. As we've reported earlier, this Honda SUV is expected to be launched by the festive season of 2023.
