While it isn’t news that the all-new Audi A6 is on its way to India, new spy shots of the model on test near Pune show that the petrol engine under the hood is a new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged unit that makes 245hp and 370Nm of peak torque. This BS6-compliant engine in the A6 45 TFSI is expected to come paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic that sends power to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

The current A6 petrol on sale in India (badged the 35 TFSI) is powered by a 1.8-litre, turbo-petrol mill that is tuned to produce 190hp and 320Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to just the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

So far, there is no official word on which diesel engine will come with the new A6. The Volkswagen Group is considering upgrading the current 2.0-litre diesel to meet upcoming BS6 emission norms as this motor does duty in a number of models, from the Skoda Octavia and Kodiaq to the Audi A4. A point to note is that the Audi A6 for international markets does come with a Euro6-compliant version of this motor, which is tuned to make 204hp and 400Nm of torque.

In terms of design, the A6 looks a lot like a scaled-down A8, which isn’t a bad thing. The new model is also 7mm longer (4,939mm), 12mm wider (1,886mm), and 2mm taller (1,457mm) than the outgoing A6. The wheelbase is also about 12mm longer (2,924mm); the expansion in dimensions aids in making to interior roomier. Considering one of the drawbacks of the current A6 is its relatively less comfortable rear bench (especially compared to rivals like the Mercedes E-class and BMW 5 Series), this should help with the new model’s appeal.

The eighth-gen A6 for India borrows a lot of its cutting-edge equipment and interior bits from the A8 (the flagship sedan’s launch will happen before its smaller sibling’s introduction), including two central touchscreens, both of which are 8.6-inches as standard – international models get a 10.1-inch upper screen as an option. The international model also comes with autonomous driving tech that comprises 37 driving assistance systems. However, this is highly unlikely to make it to the A6 for India.

Prices for the new A6 are expected to rise over the current model, which retails at Rs 50.01 lakh for the A6 35 TFSI Technology and Rs 51.01 lakh for the A6 35 TDI Technology.
