Mahindra has been working hard to reduce the order backlog that has plagued several of its popular models like the Scorpio N, XUV700 and the Thar. Increase in production as well as monthly delivery average has helped marginally reduce the waiting period on the Thar. The 4x4 variants can be had 2 months after booking, but the 4x2 variants still command a lengthy waiting period of up to 10 months. Let’s take a closer look.

    Mahindra Thar 4x4 waiting period

The 4x4 variants of the Thar command a waiting period of 6 weeks to 2 months on average across all variants – petrol, diesel, hardtop and soft-top variants – which is a decrease from 3 months in February 2024.

The 4x4 is available in two engine options: a 152hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 132hp, 2.2-litre diesel. Both engines get the option of a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The 4x4 also gets a manual-shift 4x4 transfer case, with some models getting a manual-locking differential.

Prices for the Thar 4x4 currently range between Rs 14.30 lakh-17 lakh for the petrol, while the diesel variants are priced between Rs 14.85 lakh-17.60 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

    Mahindra Thar 4x2 waiting period

The Thar's diesel 4x2 variants have a maximum waiting period of 9-10 months for the two trims it’s available on. The petrol 4x2 variants, meanwhile, have a much lower waiting period, up to a maximum of 4 months – both have come down by about a month from February 2024. The Thar 4x2 is only available with a hardtop.

The Thar 4x2 gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 118hp and 300Nm of torque. There is no automatic gearbox on the Thar diesel 4x2, but only a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol is carried over from the Thar 4x4 and is only offered with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Prices for the Thar 4x2 range between Rs 11.25 lakh-14 lakh. This is considerably lower than the 4x4 models as the 2WD is categorised in the lower tax slab of sub-4m vehicles, and therefore, demand is also much higher.
