Maruti Suzuki has announced that its smallest SUV from the Nexa line-up, the Fronx, has crossed the 1 lakh sales milestone, and Maruti says it took 300 days (or around 10 months) to achieve this. Maruti has also exported around 9,000 units of the Fronx to the Latin American and African markets.

    2. Fronx CNG comprises 20 percent of total sales
    3. Around 9,000 units exported to Africa and Latin America

Maruti Fronx: one lakh and counting

Maruti says the Fronx was able to achieve this milestone despite deliveries getting delayed due to the semiconductor issue in the first three months. At the moment, the brand retails around 12,000-14,200 units of the Fronx every month via its Nexa outlets. Maruti has further added that the average age of a Fronx owner is less than 35 years, and most of them are urban-based, first time buyers.

The Fronx currently commands a 12 percent share in the SUV market, with entry-level market share going up from 17 percent to 30 percent. While the Fronx’s pricing does overlap with the Baleno, it has its own set of customers who are looking for an entry-level compact SUV. As far as the Baleno goes, Maruti says sales of the premium hatchback have also grown over five percent in the last year.

Maruti Fronx powertrain options and sales split

The Fronx is available with two powertrain options – the 1.2-litre petrol good for 90hp and 113Nm mated to a 5-speed manual and AMT or a 1.0-litre Boosterjet that churns out 100hp and 148Nm mated to a 5-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter. Maruti adds that about 7 percent of total Fronx customers opt for the Boosterjet engine.

Around 24 percent of total Fronx sales are of the automatic gearbox-equipped variants. The 1.2-litre engine can also be had as a CNG, and contributes to 20 percent of total Fronx sales.

The Fronx petrol currently has a two-month waiting period at most outlets, but turbo-petrol models  are readily available.
