The Maruti Fronx has driven past the 2 lakh-unit wholesales milestone in India. The Baleno-based compact SUV, sold from the company’s premium Nexa outlet, went on sale on April 24, 2023. It clocked sales of 1,00,000 units in just 10 months, 1,50,000 units in 14 months, and the 2,00,000 landmark has come up in 17 months (mid-September 2024).

    1. Fronx is the fifth bestselling UV between April and August 2024
    2. Is fastest Nexa SUV to reach the 2 lakh sales mark

As per SIAM’s wholesales numbers, the Maruti Fronx sold a total of 1,34,735 units in FY2024 in its first years of sales, averaging 11,228 units monthly. In the current fiscal, between April and August 2024, the SUV has sold 59,967 units (up 15 percent YoY), which translates into monthly despatches of 11,993 units or nearly 400 units a day. This helps the Fronx grab the fifth rank amongst the Top 20 utility vehicles in the first five months of FY2025.

At the end of August 2024, the Fronx was 5,298 units short of the 2,00,000-unit mark, which would have been bridged in the first fortnight of September 2024. With this new milestone, the Maruti Fronx has become the fastest Nexa SUV to reach the 2,00,000 sales mark, taking five months less than the Maruti Grand Vitara to reach the same milestone.

Maruti Fronx: second bestselling Nexa SUV

The Maruti Fronx is among the key growth drivers of Maruti Suzuki’s market performance, particularly in the utility vehicle segment where the company is the market leader with a 25.55 percent share in the first five months of FY2025. Of its seven UVs, four products have seen a YoY sales decline. The three UVs that have seen a rise in sales are the Brezza compact SUV, which remains Maruti Suzuki’s bestselling UV with 78,337 units (up 17 percent), followed by the Ertiga MPV (77,620 units, up 52 percent) and the Fronx (59,967 units, up 15 percent). Despatches for the Grand Vitara midsize SUV, at 45,484 units, are down 5 percent and those of the XL6 (15,736 units) are down 11 percent. Jimny wholesales are down sharply by 59 percent YoY to 4,033 units, and the rebadged Invicto premium MPV too is down – by 39 percent YoY – to 939 units.

In FY2024, the Fronx was the second highest-selling Nexa model in Maruti Suzuki’s premium Nexa channel after its donor model, the Baleno (1,95,607 units). The bestselling Nexa SUV is the Grand Vitara, which has sold 1,21,169 units (up 136 percent).

The Fronx competes with the Tata Punch, Hyundai Exter, Citroen C3 as well as the recently launched Toyota Taisor, which has sold 11,218 units in four months. The Toyota Taisor is basically the rebadged Fronx produced by Maruti Suzuki for Toyota.

Of Nexa's total sales of 6,99,252 units in April-August 2024, the Fronx (59,967 units) accounts for an 8.57 percent share, the Baleno (63,580 units), accounts for 9 percent, and the Grand Vitara (45,484 units), made up for 6.50 percent of the share.
