Mercedes has taken covers off its new AMG GLC, which comes with an updated design, improved driving dynamics and a 680hp hybrid-powered range-topper for the first time. Gone is the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, and in comes the 2.0-litre, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from the AMG derivatives of the current C-Class.

    1. New AMG GLC available in 43 and 63 S e-performance guise
    2. In top-spec guise, it produces more power than a Urus Performante
    3. Regular Mercedes GLC SUV India launch soon

    Mercedes-AMG GLC powertrain

    The entry-level Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine producing 421hp at 6,750rpm supported by a 14hp belt-driven starter/generator and produces 499Nm of torque at 5,000rpm. The GLC 43 can sprint from 0-100kph in 4.8seconds.

The flagship of the range is the new AMG GLC 63 S e-Performance, which uses the same 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine, and is coupled with a 204hp motor paired with a 6.1kWh battery. Combined outputs stand at a whopping 680hp and 1020Nm of torque for what is just a midsize SUV. This range-topper can do the 0-100kph sprint in 3.5 seconds and has a top-speed limited to 274kph.

Mercedes claims that the efficiency improvement is all due to electrification. An on-board charger can supply power at speeds of up to 3.8kW and the car can travel on electric-only power for up to 12km.

    Mercedes-AMG GLC driving dynamics

The AMG GLC is equipped with several technologies to bolster driving dynamics. All cars are four-wheel drive and are equipped with AMG Dynamics, which improves electronic stability and steering response in pursuit of better cornering ability.

AMG Ride Control comes as standard in a bid to enhance comfort on uneven road surfaces. Other than that, both models gain a sports braking system, active rear steering and a sound-enhancing AMG exhaust system as standard as well.

    Mercedes-AMG GLC exterior and interior

On the outside, the new GLC gets an AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical struts and the AMG front apron with flics, sporty air intakes and chrome-plated trim element. At the rear, there’s a prominent diffuser and quad exhaust tips finished in gloss black, and a roof-integrated spoiler. The top-end AMG 63 S E will get AMG forged 21-inch wheels with a matte black finish with yellow-painted brake calipers. Other than that, both versions largely share their design with the regular GLC.

Mercedes-AMG has kept the traditional yellow and black theme alive with the AMG GLC’s interior. All cars feature black Nappa leather upholstery and a steering wheel with yellow stitching and seatbelts. The AMG Performance seats are also available as an option.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC India launch

While there’s no news of the AMG GLC making it to India anytime soon, Mercedes will be launching the regular new-gen GLC SUV in India on August 9. Bookings are already underway for a token amount of Rs 1.5 lakh and the starting price is expected to hover around Rs 75 lakh mark (ex-showroom). Expect Mercedes-Benz India to commence deliveries for the new GLC by late August this year.
