Mercedes-Benz India has been evaluating introducing the A-class sedan to its line-up, from the time we first reported on it in early 2019. Now, we can confirm that the model will be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo to gauge customer sentiment, before its launch later in the year.
Specific details about the India-spec Mercedes-Benz A-class sedan are scarce but we can confirm that it will be locally assembled at the brand’s Chakan plant, alongside models that share its platform such as the next-generation CLA and GLA. There were rumours that the A-class would replace the CLA in India – considering the four-door coupe’s raked roofline eats into rear space – but Mercedes recently confirmed the latter’s launch in 2020.
The second-gen CLA, GLA and the A-class sedan, all share the next generation version of Mercedes' MFA platform. They will also share a number of components and parts when they arrive here as CKD units – from the petrol and diesel engines on offer to interior bits like the steering and infotainment unit. This means that prices won’t be prohibitively high, as economies of scale will come into play. Expect the A-class to be priced in the Rs 32-40 lakh region.
While the A-class sedan is offered in long-wheelbase form (60mm more than standard) in certain markets, the standard 2,729mm-long wheelbase version is the one that is expected to launch here.
Both on the outside and in, the A-class shares a lot of design details with the newer crop of Mercedes cars; which is no bad thing. Engine options are yet to be revealed but the international model gets a range of petrol (from 136 to 224hp) and diesel (116 to 190hp) engine options.
Besides the GLB SUV, which is also based on the A-class’ MFA2 platform, other launches expected from Mercedes that are in the pipeline include the next-gen GLE on January 28, the all-electric EQC in April, the new GLE Coupe, all-new GLS and the four-door AMG GT.
