As MG Motor India gears up to introduce the Comet, its first city EV for our market based on the GSEV skateboard platform, parent company SAIC is readying a global debut for the all-new Yep SUV that shares underpinnings with the Comet. Ahead of its first public debut in China at the upcoming Shanghai Auto show, we’ve got our hands on the India-bound MG (Baojun) Yep micro SUV’s dimensions, powertrain and more.

    1. Baojun Yep will come to India by 2025
    2. Will be heavily localised
    3. Will be positioned above the Comet

Baojun Yep SUV will be longer than Comet

Sources tell us that the Baojun Yep SUV that is headed to India is 3,381mm long, 1,685mm wide and 1,721mm high. The Yep SUV's wheelbase, at 2,110mm, is 100mm longer than the Comet's.

    Baojun Yep SUV powertrain, range

As far as powertrain goes, the Baojun Yep SUV comes with a rear-mounted single motor set-up for now, with a dual-motor 4WD variant set to join the line-up later. It also gets an LFP battery. The current RWD iteration churns out 68hp and 140Nm and has a top speed of 100kph. The CLTC-certified driving range stands at 303km for this version.

Baojun Yep SUV will be localised for India

For India, similar to the Comet, this born-EV SUV will also be heavily localised. Going by what we have seen with the Comet, which looks similar to the Wuling counterpart sold in markets like Indonesia and China, we don’t expect to see major changes to its retro boxy three-door body or interior.

This new EV SUV will only go on sale in India by 2025, and, thanks to heavy localisation, it could be sold at an aggressive price, albeit above the Comet EV. It won’t have any direct rivals, however, it will take on the likes of the Citroen eC3 crossover.

The Yep SUV will, just like the Comet, be a unique EV offering for our market. With its small footprint and high ground clearance, it will attract city EV buyers looking for an all-electric SUV.
