MG Motor India will announce prices for the new Comet EV on April 26. The two-door, compact Comet EV finds itself in a segment completely of its own, but it will squarely rival the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3. With its smallest electric car, MG will target buyers who are looking for an urban city runabout with a small footprint.
- Expected to have claimed range of over 200km
- Is based on Wuling Air EV sold in Indonesia
- Expect bookings to commence on April 26 as well
MG Comet EV platform, powertrain details
The Comet EV is essentially a rebadged Wuling Air EV that’s sold in Indonesia and based on parent company SAIC’s GSEV platform. This born-electric platform will also underpin the EV SUV version of the Comet – the Baojun Yep SUV that has boxy proportions and a high ground clearance and will go on sale in India sometime in 2025.
As previously reported, the Comet EV will measure 2,974mm in length, 1,505mm in width, 1,631mm in height and will have a wheelbase of 2010mm, meaning it's shorter and narrower than its immediate rival, the Tiago EV. MG has yet to officially announce the details of the Comet EV’s battery pack, but it’s expected to have a battery capacity of around 20kWh with over 200km of claimed driving range on a single charge.
MG Comet EV design, interior, features
The Comet EV was recently showcased in production form where the company previewed several unique exterior packages that’ll be offered with the car. The two-door, boxy dimension with futuristic design details already gives the Comet EV a very distinctive look, which will further be complemented by quirky colour shades. You can have a closer look at Comet EV in the images here.
Also, as has been teased before, the Comet EV will be the first mass-market EV to get a dual 10.25-inch infotainment screen layout. Other highlights of the Comet EV’s interior include a two-spoke steering wheel with Apple iPod-inspired controls, a strict four-seater layout and the typical space and packaging advantages of born EVs. As for features, expect connected car tech, electric parking brake, hill-start assist, keyless entry and go, drive modes, and voice commands.
MG Comet EV expected price, rivals
The Comet EV is expected to be priced between Rs 10 lakh-12 lakh (ex-showroom). For reference, the Tata Tiago EV is priced between Rs 8.69 lakh and 11.99 lakh while the Citroen eC3 is priced between Rs 11.50 lakh-12.43 lakh, both prices ex-showroom. The Comet will be assembled in India and MG plans to give it over 60 percent localisation to price it as competitively as possible.
