The second-generation Mercedes Benz GLC SUV is currently undergoing the final stages of testing ahead of its launch in July. Bookings for the new GLC have been opened unofficially for an amount of Rs 50,000, and sources tell us that deliveries are slated to start in August. The first-gen GLC was one of Mercedes’ bestselling models not only in India, but internationally as well.
- Test mule appears to be entry-level variant
- Will launch with petrol and diesel engines, with mild-hybrid tech
- Deliveries for the new GLC will commence in August
New Mercedes GLC India testing begins
Mercedes has released images of the new-gen GLC SUV undergoing testing in India. What is quite apparent from the images is that the test mule isn’t an AMG Line variant as the grille doesn’t feature chrome-finished star inserts or large alloy wheels. The model features vertical slats in the grille and what appears to be 18-inch alloys so it could be the entry-level trim. While only the SUV has been seen testing for now, expect the new GLC coupe to also go on sale here soon, most likely in the GLC 300 or GLC 43 AMG guises.
New Mercedes GLC powertrain options for India
Overseas, the new GLC gets two four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and plug-in hybrids with a range of up to 120km, all featuring 4Matic four-wheel drive as standard. In India though, sources tell us that Mercedes will launch the GLC 200 with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and the GLC 220d with a 2.0-litre diesel, and overseas these produce 204hp/320Nm and 197hp/440Nm, respectively. Both variants will come equipped with a 48V integrated started motor, which provides an additional 23hp.
New Mercedes GLC exterior and interior
The second-gen GLC was revealed internationally in June last year. The new GLC is larger, features a more luxurious and techy interior, and gets a new range of engines, including three new plug-in hybrid drivetrains. The styling, meanwhile, is an evolution of the outgoing model, with smoother lines and new detailing. The interior, which is near-identical to the new C-class, is dominated by two screens, one 12.3-inch unit for the instrument cluster and one 11.9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen for the infotainment.
New Mercedes GLC expected price, launch timeframe and rivals
The outgoing Mercedes GLC range started at Rs 72 lakh (ex-showroom). Given the refreshed looks and new technology it now packs in, expect the second-gen GLC to cost more, around the Rs 75 lakh mark (ex-showroom). The second-gen GLC will launch in India in late July and deliveries will commence in August. Once launched, the new Mercedes GLC will have to contend with the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, Lexus NX and the Land Rover Discovery Sport in our market.
