Mini has revealed the first set of details on the all-new 5-door Cooper – the new hatchback will come to India at a later stage. Mini India has begun accepting bookings for the Countryman EV SUV and the Cooper S 3-door hatchback recently, and the 5-door shouldn't be too far behind.

Mini Cooper 5-door: what all is new?

The new 5-door Mini, just like its predecessor, is a stretched version of the 3-door Cooper and swaps that car’s four-seat interior for a more conventional five-seat set-up, with a rear bench. At 4,036mm overall, it is 160mm longer than the 3-door and 31mm longer than the old 5-door. This brings an extra 38mm of rear leg room compared with the 3-door and 65 litres more boot space, at 275 litres.

As with the 3-door Cooper, two petrol powertrain options will be available. The entry-level Cooper C has a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-pot that sends 154hp and 230Nm through the front wheels and dispatches 0-100kph in 8.0sec.

The Cooper S gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, with outputs boosted to 204hp and 300Nm. That enables a 0-100kph time of 6.8sec, which is 0.3sec slower than the 3-door Cooper S.

The new Cooper is available exclusively with an automatic gearbox, with Mini having dropped the manual version from the line-up last year. Unlike the 3-door, the bigger Cooper will not be offered with a battery-electric powertrain.

The role of a 5-door electric car has effectively been taken by the Chinese-built Aceman EV in some markets, which is based on the same platform as the electric 3-door Cooper.

The 5-door will be built alongside the petrol-engined 5-door at Mini’s Oxford plant, which is being gradually retooled to begin production of the electric Cooper and the Aceman in 2026. The upcoming Mini Convertible – the final model still to come amid the renewal of the brand’s line-up – will also be built at Oxford. The 5-door is the last car to be unveiled by Mini CEO Stefanie Wurst, who is being replaced by Stefan Richmann, BMW’s corporate strategy boss.

While the exact timeline is still unknown, Mini India is likely to bring the new 5-door Cooper to the country. Its predecessor, the third-gen model, was on sale in the country, but has been discontinued not too long ago.
