Globally unveiled in October last year, the second-gen Skoda Kodiaq has been spotted testing in India for the first time hinting that it could be inching closer to its launch here.
- Next-gen Kodiaq to be larger than the outgoing model
- Likely to get only a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine
- Expected to be launched next year
New Skoda Kodiaq spy shots: exterior, interior design
The new Kodiaq has been spied without any camouflage. The next-gen version is slightly larger than its predecessor and gets squared-off wheel arches, a prominent hexagonal grille, a heavily sculpted bonnet, the redesigned Skoda logo and new alloy wheels. The SUV’s headlamps have been redesigned. The rear has C-shaped wraparound tail-lamps with Skoda lettering in the middle. The radar at the front suggests that the new Kodiaq will also get the safety net of ADAS.
While the cabin hasn’t been revealed in the spy shots, it will likely be more or less similar to the European-spec Kodiaq. The 13-inch freestanding touchscreen will take centre stage, controlling most of the vehicle’s functions. Also on offer will be a fully digital instrument cluster along with three new physical ‘smart dials’. The outer two rotary knobs, each housing a 32mm colour display, are used to adjust the full suite of climate controls for the driver and passengers, while the middle one can be configured to control the infotainment volume, driving modes, map zoom and air conditioning.
New Skoda Kodiaq: powertrains, expected price, rivals
The new-gen Kodiaq will likely pack the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine as the outgoing model. This unit produces 190hp and 320Nm of torque. However, in the new model, it could be offered in a higher state of tune. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox, feeding power to all four wheels.
The Kodiaq is currently available in a single fully-loaded L&K variant, priced at Rs 39.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Due to the changes, a price hike is expected. Upon its launch, which is likely next year, the new Kodiaq will retain its rivalry with the Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster and Toyota Fortuner.
