Porsche boss Oliver Blume has green-lit a new coupé iteration of the third-gen Cayenne.

This new model has been conceived as a rival for the BMW X6 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé. It is also intended to broaden the scope of Porsche's Cayenne line-up.

The new Cayenne receives the same front-end styling as the third-generation Cayenne, albeit with a unique front bumper design. However, it does adopt a newly styled liftback-style tailgate, altered rear side windows and a new tail-light design. This gives the Cayenne coupé a sporting profile similar to that of the second-gen Panamera.

Porsche intends to position the Cayenne coupé as a performance model. Mechanically, two petrol engine options are set to be offered on launch – the 446hp version of its twin-turbocharged, 2.9-litre V6 and the 558hp version of its twin-turbocharged, 4.0-litre V8. No diesel engines are planned, for the new model.

The five-door Cayenne coupé was first hinted at by Blume in an interview with our sister publication, Autocar UK, last year. It will be heavily based on its more practical Cayenne sibling and will be assembled alongside it at Porsche’s factory in Leipzig, Germany.
