Skoda-VW India production crosses 15 lakh unit milestone

    One-fifth of these are India 2.0 models, including the Taigun, Kushaq, Slavia and Virtus.

    Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has achieved the milestone of manufacturing over 15 lakh vehicles in India at Chakan, Pune. The Group has also announced the production milestone of over 3.80 lakh locally made engines and over 3 lakh units of the made-in-India 2.0 products.

    Skoda, Volkswagen local manufacturing operations

    The Volkswagen Group began its local operations in India in 2007 with the Skoda Fabia at its Chakan facility. Since then, the Group has also produced the Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Polo, Vento and Ameo.

    The Chakan facility currently produces the India 2.0 products, which include the Kushaq, Taigun, Slavia and Virtus. Based on the MQB-A0-IN platform that was specifically made for India, the India 2.0 products themselves comprise over one-fifth of all models produced so far. The brand has also announced that over 30 percent of its production is exported to about 40 countries across the globe.

    Skoda, Volkswagen local engine manufacturing

    The Group began locally manufacturing engines in 2015 with the Polo hatchback's 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine. The Engine shop has produced 3.80 lakh engines in 10 years. A 2.0-litre TDI diesel and the 1.0-litre and 1.2 MPI petrol engines were also made here. Of the current crop of engines, the 1.0-litre TSI petrol is completely manufactured here, while the 1.5-litre TSI and 2.0-litre TSI petrols are locally assembled.
