Toyota has started working on the CNG version of its entry-level model – the Glanza. The premium hatchback that takes on the likes of the Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz , and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno will be the only car in its segment to get a factory-fitted CNG option.

Toyota Glanza CNG: powertrain, variants and equipment

The Glanza CNG will continue to be powered by the 1.2-litre engine, however, the power output will see a dip from around 90hp to about 77hp for the CNG. Toyota is promsing a fuel efficiency of 25kpl with the CNG model. As is the case with most CNG models, the Glanza CNG will be available only with the manual transmission, and not the AMT.

Out of the four trims available on the Glanza, Toyota will offer the CNG in the G, S and V trim levels, and will skip the base E trim. On the top-spec V trim, the Toyota hatchback gets equipment like a heads-up display, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, connected car tech and six airbags.

As is the case with most CNG models, the Glanza CNG will be pricier than its petrol-only counterpart. We expect Toyota to charge a premium of about Rs 75,000 for the CNG-powered version.

    Toyota Glanza CNG: rivals

Currently, no premium hatchback comes with an option of a CNG. However, the CNG kit will be supplied to Toyota by Maruti Suzuki, and hence, the Glanza's twin – the Baleno is also likely to come with an option of CNG. Earlier this year, Maruti Suzuki had said that it is looking to offer CNG in its Nexa line-up of cars, and the Baleno is likely to be one of the first cars from Nexa to get it.
