Toyota dealers are offering mouthwatering discounts on the Hilux lifestyle pickup. Lifestyle pickups in India are already a niche, and the Hilux – currently priced from Rs 30.40 lakh – was positioned at the higher end of the segment. The Hilux went on sale in March 2022 and has sold around 1,300 units so far. The Isuzu V-Cross is also part of the same segment, although it's priced much lower.

    • Hilux gets minimum Rs 6 lakh discount at most outlets
    • Higher variants can be had with more benefits depending on inventory
    • Isuzu V-Cross available with discounts of around Rs 2.5 lakh too

Toyota Hilux: discounts between Rs 6-8 lakh

The entry level Hilux was priced at Rs 33.99 lakh at launch in March 2022, but a year later, Toyota reintroduced the Hilux at a starting price of Rs 30.40 lakh – a Rs 3.59 lakh reduction. While the entry level Hilux Standard 4WD MT got the aforemented price cut, Toyota raised the prices of the top-spec High trim by Rs 1.35 lakh for the manual and Rs 1.10 lakh for the automatic, thus pricing them at Rs 37.15 lakh and Rs 37.90 lakh, respectively. A few dealers we spoke to confirmed that the minimum discount on the Hilux is around Rs 6 lakh, but few outlets are offering discounts up to Rs 8 lakh on higher variants, depending on inventory.  This discount is being offered at dealer level and not by the brand, so it varies depending on dealer, location and inventory.

Isuzu V-Cross: up to Rs 2.5 lakh off on top variant

The Toyota Hilux's only direct rival at the moment, the Isuzu V-Cross 4WD MT, starts at Rs 23.82 lakh and the top-end 4WD AT Prestige variant costs Rs 27.36 lakh. As far as benefits and offers go, the V-Cross Prestige can be had with discounts of around Rs 2.5 lakh at most outlets.

Toyota Hilux vs V-Cross: the price gap

Considering the discounts available on both models, the price gap between the top-spec Hilux 4WD AT and the Isuzu V-Cross Prestige, which was around Rs 10 lakh, comes down to a minimum of Rs 5 lakh on-road for most variants.

Both models come with diesel engines as standard. The more expensive Hilux gets a 204hp, 2.8-litre diesel with massive 500Nm of torque. The V-Cross Prestige, on the other hand, comes with a smaller 150hp, 350Nm, 1.9-litre diesel engine. Both trucks come with rugged off-road gear and an almost similar features list and safety kit, with the Hilux getting seven airbags as against the V-Cross' six. For the premium you pay over the Isuzu, you get a bigger engine, more power and torque, and most importantly the Toyota badge on the Hilux.

Even if you give 50% discount the HiLux will not sell as there're no roads wide enough or parking cavernous enough to accommodate it in most Indian households and may be a chore to pilot one on our narrow roads...
