Along with a slew of born-EV and other futuristic conceptsToyota will also showcase the IMV 0 concept, a ladder-frame-based pickup truck, at the event. The IMV 0 concept, going by the picture released by the brand, seems to be quite similar to the Toyota Rangga concept shown in Indonesia recently.

    2. Will go on sale in Indonesia first as a pickup truck
    3. Expected to get multiple body styles depending on the market

Toyota IMV 0: what exactly is it?

Toyota says the IMV 0 is a highly adaptable pickup truck that allows "owners to play a part in the process of creating mobility". Channeling the spirit of the classic FJ40 Land Cruiser, this concept will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show, configured in a range of body styles, including a safari-ready motorhome, a mountain-rescue ambulance, a street-food stall and an off-roader.

The concept sits on the derivative of the ladder-frame IMV platform, which also underpins other Toyota models like the Innova Crysta and Hilux sold in India. Despite introducing the modular TNGA-F ladder-frame architecture, Toyota will continue using the IMV platform for rugged models, at least in emerging markets due to cost restrictions. While Toyota has not shared details about the concept's dimensions, it looks much smaller than the Hilux.

The pickup concept shares quite a bit with the IMV 0 concept – apart from the platform – like its boxy yet cute looks, which resemble the Compact Cruiser EV concept shown earlier. Toyota says the IMV 0 concept’s retro-style design allows for faster development of new, more affordable models for specific markets.

Toyota has not revealed any powertrain details yet, but going by the platform in use, it will be safe to expect an RWD setup with petrol and diesel engine options, as well as an EV powertrain. The IMV platform is capable of supporting 4WD as well, which opens up the possibility of bringing in a rugged off-roader on the lines of the Compact Cruiser, which has been previewed earlier in EV form.
