BMW has launched the new-gen 5 Series in India. The luxury sedan is being offered in long-wheelbase form here for the first time, making India the only market outside China – and the only right-hand-drive market – to get the stretched executive luxury sedan. Read on to find out the answers to frequently asked questions about the BMW 5 Series LWB.

How much does the BMW 5 Series LWB cost?

The BMW 5 Series LWB is available in a single 530Li M Sport spec that's priced at Rs 72.90 lakh. Bookings had commenced on June 22. For reference, the all-electric BMW i5 was launched in India this April at Rs 1.20 crore (ex-showroom).

What powertrains are on offer with the BMW 5 Series LWB?

The new-gen BMW 5 Series is offered with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains overseas. However, for India, the 5 Series LWB has a single petrol engine option – it's a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that comes with 48V mild-hybrid tech mated to an 8-speed automatic. This unit produces 258hp and 400Nm of peak torque. BMW claims a 0-100kph time of 6.5 seconds, and a top speed of 250kph.

What are the BMW 5 Series LWB’s dimensions?

The BMW 5 Series LWB measures 5,165mm in length, 1,900mm in width, stands 1,518mm tall, and has a 3,105mm-long wheelbase. The dimensions are not only far greater than those of its predecessors but also more than the E-Class LWB, making it the largest car in the class. The 5 Series LWB is even larger than the next-generation E-Class LWB (L/W/H: 5,092/1,880/1,493mm; WB: 3,094mm), which will be launched here later this year.

What features does the BMW 5 Series LWB get?

The equipment on offer includes front-seat ventilation, matrix LED headlamps, an 18-speaker 655W Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a dual curved screen layout made up of a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four-zone climate control, a large sunroof, and six USB-C ports. There’s also an improved ADAS suite, which includes front collision warning and braking, and lane keep and parking assist. However, it misses out on adaptive cruise control and sunshades for the rear passengers.

Which cars does the BMW 5 Series LWB rival?

The BMW 5 Series LWB’s biggest rival is the Mercedes E-Class, which has been on offer in long-wheelbase form for a while now. The all-new E-Class is scheduled to arrive in India before the end of this year. The 5 Series LWB will also compete with the Audi A6, Lexus ES and Volvo S90.
