Mahindra finally launched the Thar Roxx on Independence Day, four years after the debut of the second-gen Thar 3-door in India. The 5-door version, one of the most anticipated launches of 2024, has been under development for over two years. Despite its niche, the regular Thar 3-door has been a huge success for Mahindra, and the new Thar Roxx will only diversify that appeal with added practicality and premium features, all while retaining its off-roading DNA. Here, we answer some of the most common questions about the Thar Roxx.

How much does the Mahindra Thar Roxx cost?

Pricing for the Mahindra Thar Roxx starts at Rs 12.99 lakh for the entry-level MX1 petrol variant and Rs 13.99 lakh for the entry-level diesel one. The manufacturer has only revealed the prices of the rear-wheel drive variants for now. Prices of 4x4 variants will be revealed at a later date. Take a look at the variant-wise prices of the Mahindra Thar Roxx below.

What engine options are on offer with the Thar Roxx?

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is available with the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mStallion and 2.2-litre diesel mHawk diesel engines as the Thar 3-door, Scorpio-N and XUV700, but in varying state of tunes. The Thar Roxx's petrol engine puts out 162hp and 330Nm torque when coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and 177hp and 380Nm torque with the 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine generates 152hp and 330Nm on the 4x2 variants. However, the output bumps up to 175hp and 370Nm on the 4x4 variants. It should be noted that the Thar Roxx petrol gets a rear-wheel drive setup as standard. The 4x4 configuration is only available with the diesel engine.

How does the Thar Roxx differ from the regular Thar?

The Thar Roxx has a 400mm longer wheelbase than the regular Thar, measuring 2,850mm which means the ladder-frame chassis is more closely related to that of the Scorpio N’s. It also carries over the Scorpio N’s more sophisticated suspension setup, including the frequency-dependent dampers, allowing for better on-road manners. In addition, it also gets an electric power steering as opposed to Thar 3-door's hydraulic unit.

In terms of styling, the Roxx's grille gets a new double-stacked six-slot design, instead of the seven-slot one seen on the 3-door Thar. The circular headlamps continue, but with LED projector lamps and new C-shaped DRLs. The cabin has also been revamped with lighter and more soft-touch materials, along with a new steering wheel and a revised centre console.

What features does the Tharr Rox get over the regular Thar?

The Thar Roxx packs a bunch of new features over the regular Thar, including a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, LED projector headlamps, a 360-degree camera, push-button start, front and rear centre armrests, rear AC vents, six airbags instead of two, bigger 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and even a panoramic sunroof. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and ADAS Level 2 safety suite are also a part of the mix. The Thar Roxx also gets rear disc brakes compared to just the front disc brakes in the regular Thar.

What is the Thar Roxx's Bharat NCAP crash test rating?

Mahindra claims that the crash protection on the Thar Roxx is greatly improved. However, the SUV's Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) score is yet awaited. The Thar 3-door had received a 4-star rating from Global NCAP in 2020. Meanwhile, here's the full list of cars that have been tested by Bharat NCAP so far.
