The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid is the most powerful version of the SUV yet, putting the pure-V8 Turbo GT in second place. The plug-in hybrid super-SUV is now on sale in international markets, with a choice of conventional and coupe body styles.

The Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid gets 599hp from an "extensively reworked" twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, and 176hp from an electric motor. The combined total output is 739hp and a mammoth 950Nm of torque, making it Porsche’s most powerful ICE car, albeit only in its current portfolio. The German manufacturer has claimed a 0-100kph time of 3.7sec and a top speed of 295kph.

Meanwhile, a 25.9kWh battery beneath the boot gives an electric-only range of 82km – significantly more than the 30km offered by the previous Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid.

The range-topping Cayenne can be differentiated from the standard model by a purposeful makeover, comprising larger air intakes at the front, quad-exit exhausts and coloured brake callipers. It comes equipped as standard with adaptive air suspension and torque vectoring, while Porsche's Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and rear-axle steering systems are available as optional extras.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid GT package: go faster

Adding the GT Package (for a significant premium) brings a titanium exhaust, a carbon-fibre roof, bespoke bodywork and an even stronger performance: 0-100kph in 3.6sec and a top speed of 305kph.

As with other models from the Zuffenhausen-based GT division, the PHEV's cockpit sports a raft of track-oriented embellishments, including aluminium trim elements, microfibre headlining, a microfibre steering wheel, a driving-mode selector switch and sports seats.
