KTM resumes production at Mattighofen

KTM ceased production at its Austrian facility after entering a 90 day self administered financial restructuring in November 2024. Now, according to a report by MCN, a company spokesperson has stated that production has resumed in Mattighofen.

The latest news is that the company has resumed operations at its home base, although the spokesperson declined to comment on what bikes are back in production. It is unclear whether the production has resumed for existing models or new products on the 990 and 1390 platforms that were showcased at EICMA 2024.

Among KTM’s many problems is a huge amount of unsold inventory that was reportedly as high as 2,65,000 units worldwide as of December 2024. The company found itself in this situation by focusing on high-production volumes despite signs of a slow-down in the motorcycle market. A further complication lies in the fact that stricter upcoming emission norms will make the sale of these “new old bikes” even more of a challenge. The company did recently announce a new four-year warranty package to make these motorcycles more appealing along with large discounts being offered.

On March 4, long-time CEO, Stefan Pierer resigned from the executive board of KTM AG, with former Co-CEO Gottfried Neumeister taking charge. However, Pierer is still on the board of KTM’s parent company, Pierer Mobility.

While KTM is in turmoil overseas, Indian operations have been unaffected. The 125, 200, 250 and 390 models continue to be made by Bajaj and new bikes will be added to the line up soon. These include the upcoming KTM 390 Enduro R which is due to be launched in April as well as a new 160 Duke and RC 160 which should go on sale in the festive season
