TVS Motor Co., which is having a strong run in the scooter market in the current fiscal with sales of 13,30,260 units (up 23 percent year on year) from April-December 2024, has two key products driving this growth – its bestseller, the Jupiter range, and the NTorq 125.

By the end of December 2024, the NTorq 125 had sold a total of 18,88,715 units (1.88 million units), contributing 24 percent to the 7.94 million TVS scooters sold in India since February 2018.

In the first 10 months of the current fiscal, a total of 2,67,679 units have been sold, which makes for a 6 percent YoY growth and a resultant reduced share of 20 percent of the company’s scooter despatches. Nevertheless, the NTorq 125 remains the fourth bestselling scooter in India, after the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter, and Suzuki Access.

The NTorq’s importance in TVS’ scooter portfolio stems from the fact that after the Jupiter 110 and 125 (which sold 7,90,028 units in April-December 2024), it remains TVS’ second bestselling scooter.

    Targeted at Young India

TVS introduced the NTorq in early 2018 when scooter buyers’ preference for 125cc models was just about taking shape in India. Over the past few years, the company has, at regular intervals, introduced new variants to retain model freshness and rev up sales.

The NTorq is available in six variants – base (drum/disc), Race Edition, Super Squad Edition, Race XP and Race XT, with pricing starting from Rs 84,600 to Rs 1,04,600 (ex-showroom Mumbai). While the Race XP gets a slightly more powerful engine at 10.2hp and 10.8Nm, the rest aren't too far behind, at 9.4hp and 10.5 Nm of torque. The differences between the Disc, Race Edition and Super Squad Edition are purely cosmetic.

Jupiter, NTorq help TVS increase scooter market share to 25 percent

While the Jupiter, which recently crossed 7 million sales, remains the biggest contributor to TVS’ scooter sales with a 62 percent share since its launch, the NTorq holds a strong No. 2 position with a 24 percent share.

The NTorq’s strong showing in the competitive Indian scooter marketplace, along with the Jupiter’s sustained growth, has helped TVS increase its market share. From FY2018 through to FY2025, the company has expanded its footprint from 18.52 percent to 25.55 percent, enabling it to take the No. 2 position after Honda (43 percent scooter market share). Suzuki, at No. 3, has a 14.66 percent scooter market share.

NTorq No.1 exported scooter in first 9 months of FY2025

On the export front, TVS has shipped 50,640 NTorqs to overseas markets between April and December 2024, up 16 percent YoY. Of the total 71,425 scooters that the company has exported in the April-December 2024 period, the NTorq, with 50,640 units, accounts for a 71 percent share. It is followed by the Jupiter (15,826 units), iQube electric scooter (896 units) and BMW CE 02 (4,063 units), which TVS manufactures for BMW Motorrad at its Hosur plant. Of the total 5,633 made-in-India electric two-wheelers shipped to overseas markets in the first nine months of FY2025, TVS Motor Co. accounts for 88 percent.
