SCOOP! Mahindra XUV300 EV coming by June 2024 as Nexon EV rival

The heavily updated Mahindra XUV300 SUV, which is due to launch next year, will also get an EV powertrain, reports our sister publication Autocar Professional. The XUV300 EV will have similar design updates as the XUV300 facelift, but will have some EV-specific styling tweaks.

Mahindra's XUV400 EV, which currently rivals the Tata Nexon EV, has been a slow-seller, and with the new XUV300 EV, the brand aims to have a more competitive edge in the mass-market electric SUV segment that is currently being dominated by the Nexon EV.

    1. XUV300 will come with a 35kWh battery
    2. Will have fresh looks, more features
    3. Will be priced around Rs 2 lakh less than XUV400 EV

XUV300 EV will be positioned as Nexon EV rival

The XUV300 EV will benefit from all the major design updates that will be seen on the facelift of the ICE-powered SUV, and that means it will look much fresher than the XUV400 EV.

The XUV300 EV will sport design cues seen on the Mahindra BE SUV line-up with the new-look drop-down LED daytime running lamp, along with a completely redesigned bumper and headlamp assembly. It will also get a new two-part grille with a larger central air intake.

At the back, there will be a redesigned tailgate with a full-width LED light bar. It will also have C-shaped tail-lamps, and the registration plate will be moved on the bumper instead of on the tailgate. There will be a new set of alloy wheel designs as well, depending on the variant.

    Mahindra XUV300 EV interior highlights

On the inside of the XUV300 EV, there won’t be major differences, although we can confirm that the dashboard will have mild alterations to accommodate a much bigger infotainment screen, like repositioning the AC vents, and minor changes to the switchgear on the centre console. The Nexon EV has taken the screen size game to the next level with the top-variant getting a massive 12.3-inch infotainment screen. Mid-spec variants of the Nexon EV make do with a 10.25-inch screen.

As for boot space, being based on the sub-4m XUV300, it will ilkely be similar to its ICE sibling of around 257 litres, and will certainly be smaller than the 378-litre boot seen on the XUV400 EV. The XUV300’s boot space would still fall short of the 350-litre capacity that’s on the Nexon EV.

In an emailed response to a query about the XUV300 EV, a Mahindra & Mahindra spokesperson said that the company does not comment on speculation.

    Mahindra XUV300 EV powertrain details

The XUV300 EV will come with a 35kWh battery, which is smaller than the 40kWh one seen on the larger XUV400 EV. There are, however, no details on the range or electric motor specifications at this moment.

Mahindra XUV300 EV expected pricing, launch timeline

The freshly coined XUV300 EV will be positioned below the existing XUV400 EV, and will be priced in the range of Rs 15 lakh-17 lakh (ex-showroom). This prices it around Rs 2 lakh less than the XUV400 EV. Expect the price announcement of the XUV300 EV to take place by June next year. The XUV300 facelift with petrol and diesel engines will launch before the XUV300 EV, likely by February 2024.
