BYD Sealion 7 Review

The BYD Sealion 7 firmly establishes BYD as a premium EV brand in India, following its earlier models, the e6/eMax7, Atto 3 and Seal. The Sealion 7, a crossover SUV, builds upon the Seal sedan with notable improvements, making it a more appealing option for a broader range of buyers.

Exterior-wise, the Sealion 7 boasts a 170mm ground clearance, up from the Seal’s 145mm, and a sloping roof that makes it appear compact despite its 4.8m length and 2.9m wheelbase. The design, while similar to the Seal’s, leans more towards a coupe SUV, with bold 19-20-inch wheels and prominent black trim accents. Inside, the Sealion 7’s cabin is high-quality, matching or surpassing luxury cars in its materials and finish. The 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen and digital driver’s display are standout features, but the cabin’s design is more conventional compared to the Seal sedan.

The car is well-equipped with features like wireless smartphone integration, a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, dual-zone climate control, and 11 airbags. It also includes Level 2 Autonomous Driving Assistance, a driver attention monitor, and a heads-up display, though the latter can be distracting due to the amount of data shown. A large fixed glass roof adds to the airy feel inside, with a powered roller blind to manage sun exposure.

BYD Sealion 7 range and charging

The Sealion 7 offers a single battery option, the 82.56kWh Blade Cell LFP pack, providing a range of 567km for the single-motor version and 542km for the dual-motor variant. The car supports DC fast charging up to 150kW, but the supplied 7kW wall box charger is slow. A Vehicle-to-load function allows you to power external devices using the car’s battery.

BYD Sealion 7 driving impressions

On the road, the dual-motor version with 530hp and 690Nm accelerates from 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds. Both versions offer smooth, progressive power delivery, with the RWD version providing ample power for everyday driving. However, the SUV’s higher centre of gravity leads to noticeable body roll, making it more comfortable than sporty, with firm yet composed ride quality. The larger 20-inch wheels can be felt on a rough surface though.

BYD Sealion 7 price and verdict

Priced between Rs 48.9 lakh-54.9 lakh, the Sealion 7 competes with the BMW iX1, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volvo EX40. Though BYD’s service network is smaller, the Sealion 7 impresses with its luxurious build, advanced tech, and solid range, making it a top contender in the premium EV market.
