The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is Toyota’s first foray into the mid-size SUV segment, and has been co-developed with Maruti Suzuki, which also has a sister model called the Grand Vitara. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is powered by hybrid-only petrol engines – there is a 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid sourced from Maruti and Toyota’s own 1.5-litre petrol strong-hybrid. The petrol mild-hybrid engine, in manual guise, also gets an all-wheel drive option. The strong-hybrid engine only comes mated to an e-CVT transmission. It rivals the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Nissan Kicks and MG Astor; and the Grand Vitara as well, of course.

Toyota might be late to the midsize SUV bandwagon, but it has come all guns blazing with the Hyryder. It looks modern and exudes a rugged appeal, and it also gets the basics right with a well-judged ride and handling balance. The Toyota Hyryder's interior looks upmarket, the seats are comfortable, and its equipment list is generous.
The ace up its sleeve is its strong hybrid powertrain which is smooth and is very efficient in the real world. Sure, performance isn’t as strong as its turbo-petrol rivals and its boot is quite small, but in every other area, the Hyryder comes across as a well-rounded practical SUV. Plus, the lure of the Toyota badge will only strengthen its appeal.
