Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 design

“Archetypical cruiser” is how Mark Wells, Royal Enfield’s chief of design, describes the bike, and it’s hard to disagree with him. Even before we’d clocked a single kilometre on this bike, we were smitten by how good this bike looks. And it’s an opinion the general public seems to share. From the large teardrop-shaped fuel tank, that swooping rear fender and those chrome exhaust header pipes, this bike is a looker.

Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 features

The Super Meteor isn’t the most tech-laden thing on the market but its simple, digi-analogue display shows you all that the information you need to know. The Tripper navigation pod is standard on all variants of the bike and you can receive navigation information once you pair your smartphone to it via the Royal Enfield app.

Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 Engine and performance

You didn’t have to be a motorcycling visionary to tell that this engine would work well in a cruiser, even when riding it in the Interceptor. So at the cost of stating the obvious, the 648cc parallel-twin is adept at its new role. It’s as gutsy as ever at the bottom end, which is just what you want in a low-stress, low-effort motorcycle such as this. Keep it twisted and you’ll feel a nice surge in the mid-range, as the bike begins to really gather pace. What’s nice is that it doesn’t fall flat at the top end, instead maintaining a fairly healthy drive all the way to the limiter. Despite its heft, the Super Meteor 650 manages the 0-100kph sprint in 6.97s.

Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 Ride and handling

The firm edge of the suspension set-up (particularly at the rear) is felt more here in the city and over larger road imperfections it can get to the point of being harsh. The Super Meteor handles surprisingly well for a bike with this form factor and dimensions. Its stable and planted around bends and the only hindrance is the limited cornering clearance on offer, although for most people this will not be a hindering factor.

Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 Price and Verdict

For those of you who are considering getting a Super Meteor as a tourer, if you're okay with the few (but fundamental) sacrifices it asks you to make, I'd suggest heading  directly to your nearest Royal Enfield dealer. It looks great, sounds quite neat (if a little quiet), has proven to be extremely reliable in our 10 months with it and has all the charisma and machismo of Clint Eastwood in his prime. The Super Meteor comes across as a rather friendly and easy bike to live with, and one that can certainly fulfil the role of being the only bike in your garage. Even more so when you consider that you can kit it out with things like hard luggage, right from the factory.
