Longer and wider than earlier models, the latest BMW 3 Series has grown to become a fairly substantial car. The low-slung shape, however, is classic 3 Series. Styling is attractive and M Sport trim versions with their sportier bumpers and larger wheels add in an extra dose of visual drama. You are sat low in a 3 Series and so ingress-egress isn’t the most convenient. Once in place, the chauffeur-driven will find the rear seat supportive and comfy but the large centre tunnel means middle passengers get a raw deal. Front seat comfort is good and drivers will also like the good visibility on offer.
On the inside, the 3 Series looks and feels like a new-age BMW. The dash is neat and user-friendly and you’ll also like the touchscreen’s slickness. Unfortunately, the digital dials looks better than they are in practice; the layout of the instruments isn’t the most intuitive. There are also some ordinary plastics in the 3 Series cabin.
The 320d diesel is the mainstay of the 3 Series range. Its 190hp, twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine is refined and offers punchy performance. Petrolheads will take keenly to the 330i petrol. Its 258hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivers exciting performance. True to DNA, the 3 Series is fun to drive even if turn-in isn’t quite as sharp as earlier models. On the plus side, ride quality has improved. There is still some firmness at low speeds but high speed manners are impressive, and make the latest 3 Series an able long distance machine.
